He was so old that his brown coat was bald in patches and showed the seams underneath, and most of the hairs in his tail had been pulled out to string bead necklaces. He was wise, for he had seen a long succession of mechanical toys arrive to boast and swagger, and by-and-by break their mainsprings and pass away, and he knew that they were only toys, and would never turn into anything else. For nursery magic is very strange and wonderful, and only those playthings that are old and wise and experienced like the Skin Horse understand all about it.

“What is REAL?” asked the Rabbit one day, when they were lying side by side near the nursery fender, before Nana came to tidy the room. “Does it mean having things that buzz inside you and a stick-out handle?”

“Real isn’t how you are made,” said the Skin Horse. “It’s a thing that happens to you. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves you, then you become Real.”

“Does it hurt?” asked the Rabbit.

“Sometimes,” said the Skin Horse, for he was always truthful. “When you are Real you don’t mind being hurt.”

“Does it happen all at once, like being wound up,” he asked, “or bit by bit?”

“It doesn’t happen all at once,” said the Skin Horse. “You become. It takes a long time. That’s why it doesn’t happen often to people who break easily, or have sharp edges, or who have to be carefully kept. Generally, by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in the joints and very shabby. But these things don’t matter at all, because once you are Real you can’t be ugly, except to people who don’t understand.”

“I suppose you are real?” said the Rabbit. And then he wished he had not said it, for he thought the Skin Horse might be sensitive. But the Skin Horse only smiled.
”

-
The Velveteen Rabbit by Margery Williams

And, if you bitch about parking, you buy the next round for everyone.

As many of you have heard, we’re planning on moving to another bar on Capitol Hill as soon as it opens — more on that later.

Hope to see some of you at good ol’ Linda’s — hope the waitstaff are as surly as ever!

Wednesday, May 26, 2010

6:30pm

Apply here: http://www.founderdating.com

The event attempts to help talented folks who want to start companies find co-founders and ideas.

The event attempts to help in the company formation process.

You can read more and/or apply at www.founderdating.com.

The first one (in February) was great, with 110 applicants and 35 invited to attend … looks like at least 2 founding teams came together at the event only two months ago! Please help spread the word.

Entrepreneurs - Apply NOW to TechStars Seattle

TechStars is a mentorship-driven, seed-stage investment program. It is now accepting applications for the inaugural Seattle class. The early deadline for applications is May 21, 2010, with a final deadline of June 1, 2010. Those groups that apply by the early deadline may be selected to participate in TechStars-For-A-Day a one-day mini camp for applicants to see what the program is like. The 10 companies selected for the Seattle TechStars class will kick off the program on August 16, 2010.

Program Summary:

• Three-month program to help a founding team focus on building a great company

• Access to over 40 first-class mentors who will provide advice, contacts, and best practices

• $6,000 per founder (up to three founders) to help get your company off the ground

• Companies attend over 40 sessions with the program mentors during the program

• TechStars provides working and meeting spaces with fast, reliable wireless Internet access

• At the end of the program, TechStars organizes an Investor Demo Day where approximately 200 venture capitalists and investors come together to talk with you about your business and potentially provide follow-on financing

Who are the mentors?

The Seattle program of TechStars has over 40 mentors including founders from top startups like Redfin, Zillow, Cheeseburger Network, Picnik, Hops and Chops :-) and UrbanSpoon. Representatives from every venture capital firm in town, as well as Senior executives and technology experts from Amazon, Google, Microsoft, the University of Washington, and more.

What does TechStars get from working with these startups?

In exchange for the seed investment, resources and access to the program, TechStars will get a 6% equity stake in the company. TechStars receives “founders stock” which is common stock, just like the other co-founders. It is important to TechStars to be thought of as an experienced and well-connected co-founder with the same risk and reward system that management has. As a result, TechStars has an incentive to remain a long-term partner and resource for your company, well after the three-month program has ended.

How successful is TechStars?

The program has had a lot of successes in its other cities with 56% of its mentored startups going on to get further venture/seed funding. TechStars tracks its success metrics in many ways, which you can review by going to www.techstars.org/results.

We had a fantastic Hops and Chops gathering this week, thanks largely to Seattle 2.0’s assistance with attendance, as they welcomed new Editor, Jennifer Cabala. We all know that Marcelo won’t be going away (despite the fact that Daryn tried to start the rumor that Marcelo’s moving to San Francisco to get his new startup going), but it’s great to see that even more energy will be brought to the effort, by Jennifer.

What’s next for Hops and Chops? Here’s a sampling:

1) As soon as it opens, we’ll be relocating Hops and Chops, again, back to Capitol Hill — where, you ask? The new bar’s name is Auto Battery, and it’s located next to Po Dogs (new hot dog joint). More info as we settle on dates/details.

2) New idea — a ‘swag swap’ — who’s up for it? Everyone brings a bunch of startup/employer swag, and swaps it around. Great way to clear out some inventory, and get some co-promotion walking around our fair city!

3) Startup talks? Ahhh, just kidding. But, Auto Battery does have shuffleboard. I see a tournament in our future — no ringers allowed.

Andrew Maguire is one of the founders of InternMatch, and is...

Andrew Maguire is one of the founders of InternMatch, and is becoming a frequent Hops and Chops attendee.

InternMatch personalizes the process of connecting employers with qualified interns (especially in the non-profit and small business space).

David Reeves is one of the founders of Limeade, and is also one...

David Reeves is one of the founders of Limeade, and is also one of our most frequent Hops and Chops attendees (and a fellow motorcycle/scooter rider!)

This led to a lengthy Hops and Chops debate about where our migration would lead us — @daryn ended it with “What about Jonathan Sposato’s Spitfire?” — perfect — owned by the co-founder of Picnik, willing to reserve us a table, and a nice central location. The available back room lounge doesn’t hurt either.
